States mandate annual training on inmate suicide prevention for professionals in Corrections, and suicide prevention training is also part of the initial orientation for new hires. Some States also mandate refresher courses to complement annual training sessions.
In case of litigation following a completed inmate suicide, attending an inmate suicide prevention course can demonstrate due diligence on behalf of the Institution and its employees, and this, by itself, can significantly reduce, or altogether eliminate, associated liability. From our experience, if litigation ensues, Courts find legal responsibility with all parties involved in inmate management, from Correctional Officers, to Jails and Prisons and also the mental health provider contracted to perform medical services to inmates.
In this seminar, attendees will
– familiarize themselves with recognizing key elements of an “at-risk” incarcerated individual
– learn how to screen admitted individuals for suicidal behavior
– learn how to mitigate the risk for suicide of an “at-risk” individual
– better understand their roles and responsibilities in inmate suicide prevention
– receive practical tools that can be easily employed by correctional personnel during the course of their job
(a detailed curriculum of the session is available in this page)
At the completion of the seminar, each attendee will receive:
– CME/CEU credits
– a certificate of attendance (via email, pdf)
– a laminated Screening check-list developed by Dr. Daniel (mailed)
– Dr. Daniel’s book, Suicide in Jails and Prisons: Preventive and Legal Perspectives – A Guide for Correctional and Mental Health Staff, Experts, and Attorneys (mailed)
– a personalized pen developed for NASA personnel, in dark gray (mailed, details here)
