Dr. Daniel is an internationally renowned expert on suicide and suicide-prevention in jails and prisons. In the United States, since 2006 he provided expert consultations and worked with attorneys in over 100 correctional cases, of which 75 directly related to suicide in the institutionalized correctional population.
He testified in both state and federal courts by deposition and at trial, and represented both plaintiffs and defendants.
As Forensic Psychiatrist, dr. Daniel has devoted the past twenty-five years in his professional life to correctional mental health and psychiatry.
During this time, he also served as expert consultant on suicide-related litigation. Dr. Daniel is a suicide researcher and authored peer-reviewed articles on inmate suicide risk identification and prevention, as well as risk management strategies relating to suicide.
In 2007, together with other distinguished suicide researchers and clinicians from Europe, Canada, Australia, and the United States, he coauthored the World Health Organization (WHO) Resource Guide: “Preventing Suicide in Jails and Prisons”.
This resource series, co-produced by WHO and IASP (International Association for Suicide Prevention), has been published in several languages, with the version in English language available for reviewing and downloading on WHO’s website (by clicking the link, the Adobe pdf version of the publication will open as a new page).
Dr. Daniel started his medical career in 1971 with the National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences (NIMHANS), Bangalore, India.
He continued his training in Adult General Psychiatry and also received a fellowship in Child Psychiatry
at University of Missouri, Columbia, US.
Prior to becoming a Diplomate of the American Boards of Psychiatry and Forensic Psychiatry in the US, dr. Daniel received his board certification from the Royal College of Psychiatrists of United Kingdom (M.R.C. Psych.).
Dr. Daniel is licensed by the State Board of the Healing Arts of Missouri since 1975.
Past professional assignments include Medical Director positions with Menzies Institute of Recovery from Addiction and Assisted Recovery Centers of America, both located in St. Louis, MO, Psychiatric Consultant roles with Boone County Jail, Missouri Department of Corrections, and Missouri State Board of Probation and Parole in Columbia, MO, and Director of Psychiatric Services and Chief of Psychiatry at Missouri State Department of Corrections.
As an academic, Dr. Daniel served as Clinical Professor of Psychiatry (Child and Adolescent) at the University of Missouri School of Medicine in Columbia, MO. He is currently teaching as Adjunct Professor of Psychiatry at the same University and is the President of Daniel Forensic Psychiatric Services.
The American Journal of Psychiatry and the Journal of Correctional Health Care list dr. Daniel as former reviewer and the Journal of American Academy of Psychiatry and The Law as associate editor.
Dr. Daniel authored an extensive list of scientific papers on suicide prevention.
Dr. Daniel’s work has been recognized world-wide and in the US by numerous honors and awards.
